Staying near the Colosseum means waking up just steps away from the world’s most famous amphitheatre, with the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill and the Baths of Caracalla all within easy reach. The neighbourhood surrounding the Flavian amphitheatre — spanning Celio, Esquiline and Monti — offers accommodation for every budget, from charming boutique hotels to luxury properties with panoramic terraces overlooking the monument.
The location is strategically excellent: the Roman Forum, the Colosseum and the B line metro station (Colosseo stop) are all within walking distance, offering quick connections to the rest of the city.
Hotel Romano is one of those places that wins you over before you even step inside: it sits literally between the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, with the Imperial Forums opening up before your window. It’s a boutique hotel set within a 15th-century palazzo, featuring frescoed rooms, family management and an instantly warm, carefully curated atmosphere. Some rooms have a small terrace with spectacular views of the Altare della Patria and the Forums. The staff are always smiling and helpful. Guests rate the location 9.8 out of 10 — hard to do better in Rome.
B&B Santi Quattro al Colosseo sits in the heart of the Celio neighbourhood, a five-minute walk from the Colosseum and the B line metro. It’s housed in a historic building with elegantly furnished rooms and terracotta floors, and boasts a detail we particularly appreciate: a shared terrace with views of the amphitheatre, perfect for an evening aperitivo. Breakfast includes croissants, homemade cakes and cured meats. The restaurant Il Bocconcino, partnered with the property, is fifty metres away: authentic Roman cuisine at rates reserved for guests.
Royal House impresses with its location: it stands directly opposite the Colosseum, two hundred metres from the metro, with some rooms overlooking the amphitheatre or the Ludus Magnus directly. The Royal Art Café on the ground floor has a panoramic terrace that’s worth the stay alone, and continental breakfast is included. One thing to know: the property is on the first and second floors of a historic palazzo with no lift — no problem if you travel light, but best to know in advance.
Ludus Rooms is just two minutes’ walk from the Colosseum, on Via San Giovanni in Laterano: couldn’t be more central. The rooms are soundproofed, with private bathrooms, balconies with city views and a shared kitchen for guests. The staff speak English, Spanish and Italian and have been described by many guests as genuinely welcoming and attentive — you’re greeted at check-in with tea, coffee and biscuits. Like many historic Roman buildings, there’s no lift here either: it’s on the third floor.
Tre R Colosseo sits practically opposite the Colosseum on Via Nicola Salvi, a two-minute walk from the entrance. The rooms are elegant, with parquet floors and soundproofed windows, and Italian breakfast with fresh coffee and pastries is served each morning in the adjacent bar. What struck us most is the couple’s score on Booking: 10 out of 10, an extremely rare result. The overall guest rating is 9.3. For unbeatable value and location, this is the right choice.
Domus Real Cardello is a tiny four-room guest house on Via del Cardello, two hundred metres from the Colosseum. The atmosphere is that of a private home: there’s Anna, the proprietor, who brings breakfast directly to your room each morning and has become the beating heart of the property over the years. The rooms are carefully decorated with parquet or terracotta floors, air conditioning and satellite TV. If you want an authentic, family-run experience — far from anonymous hotel anonymity — you’ll be very happy here.
Palazzo Manfredi — opened in 2003 as Hotel Gladiatori — is the area’s most iconic five-star property. It stands literally above the remains of the Ludus Magnus, the training ground where gladiators exercised, with the Colosseum rising majestically before you. The panoramic Roof Garden and AROMA restaurant, with its amphitheatre views, are simply unforgettable. The 17 rooms — standard, superior, deluxe and suites — are appointed with fine marbles, quality fabrics and artworks. A truly unique address.
Hotel Celio is one of those discoveries you make almost by chance, then find yourself recommending to everyone. Set in a 19th-century palazzo on the Celio hill, about 400 metres from the Colosseum, it has rooms decorated with mosaics and frescoes inspired by Roman art, creating a genuinely unique atmosphere. The panoramic terrace overlooking the Celio rooftops is the ideal spot for a peaceful breakfast, far from the tourist hustle. A four-star boutique hotel with real soul.
