Rome’s second airport is Ciampino (IATA code: CIA), named after Giovan Battista Pastine. It serves as Rome’s city airport, situated just a short distance from the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road. Despite its history as a military and institutional airport, over the past decade it has opened up to scheduled services, particularly thanks to the arrival of budget airlines.
Ciampino airport predominantly handles international traffic, as the majority of domestic flights to and from Rome are managed by the larger and more important Fiumicino airport. However, its location makes it convenient for reaching the city centre, and its budget airline focus means fares to get there are often very competitive.
To reach your hotel or Rome’s city centre once you’ve landed, book a transfer online, which is the most convenient option.
Once you’ve disembarked, a short walk will take you outside the terminal building. From here, you can reach Rome’s city centre by bus or taxi. The journey time between Ciampino and Termini station is approximately 20-30 minutes outside peak hours; however, you should always bear in mind that during the busier times of day this can double.
Outside the terminal you’ll find buses ready to take you to Rome’s city centre. The cost is very affordable and services are frequent, though you should be aware that if your flight arrives late in the evening, there may be no further buses running. The buses are equipped with free wi-fi and air conditioning.
If your destination in Rome is near a metro station, you can use the ATRAL bus service which runs from Ciampino airport to the Anagnina stop on metro line A. From there, you can complete your journey by metro to your destination.
The ATRAL bus runs every day from early morning to late evening, with a bus every 18 minutes Monday to Saturday, and every 25 minutes on Sundays.
The third and final public transport option from Ciampino to Rome involves taking the ATRAL bus service which connects Pastine airport with Ciampino railway station, from where you can board the numerous regional trains that go to Termini, departing every 12 minutes. The journey takes just 15 minutes.
The ATRAL bus is the same one that also goes to Anagnina, so choose the combination of transport that suits your needs based on where you need to go in the city.
Taxis from Ciampino to Rome (to any destination within the Aurelian Walls) have a fixed price. The journey time naturally varies depending on traffic entering the city, but it could still be worthwhile in terms of time if your accommodation is far from the metro or difficult to reach by bus, and it’s practically essential if your flight arrives late in the evening or is delayed.
Always steer clear of unlicensed taxis – fortunately now far fewer in number than in the past – who may approach you whilst you’re still inside the terminal, offering you fares that seem attractive but aren’t actually good value.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Rome airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Rome airport visit this site.
There are no direct connections between Ciampino airport and other cities in Italy. However, its short distance from Rome’s Termini station means it’s actually very well connected to the rest of Italy: all you need to do is get there to have a huge range of options for travelling by train across Italy using the high-speed rail network.
If you’re using a car, whether your own or a hire car, you can easily reach the Italian motorway network from Ciampino, as the terminal is just over one kilometre from exit 23 of the Grande Raccordo Anulare, from where you can access both the A1 motorway (in both north-south directions) and the A24 motorway heading east, which extends as far as Abruzzo.
